What are Stem Cells?
Stem cells have two properties:
Self-renewal - the ability to go through numerous cycles and cell divisions while maintaining the undifferentiated state
Differentiation - the capacity to differentiate into other cell types
Stem cells are unprogrammed cells that can differentiate into cells with specific functions. Stem cells have therefore a big potential in regenerative medicine. Regenerative medicine will result in an extended healthy life span. Stem cell research is now a fascinating, hot topic that is already used in cosmetics.
Stem Cells for Aging and damaged skin
As we age, the reduced turnover of our cells means we can lose control over how our skin ages. Epidermal stem cells needed to create healthy new skin are significantly reduced and function less efficiently.
Stem cells have a limited life expectancy because UV, smoking and ozone all hasten skin cell depletion, resulting in DNA damage, telomere shortening and oxidative stress. Cell depletion does not activate stem cells to change into new cells. Aging stem cells lead to a decreased capacity for repair. Skin rejuvenation comes to a halt when stem cells remain inactive. Under the right stimulus, stem cell activity could be jump-started to initiate skin rejuvenation.
Scientists have found that a novel extract derived from the stem cells shows tremendous ability to rejuvenate aging skin.
